Both parts of the suspension support levels of excursion in excess of the linear limits of the motor and coil design. The surround features the geometry as the “SPL” cone options on Sundown’s larger woofers, in a bit smaller size to suit the excursion capacity of this woofer. This spider was heavily FEA optimized to do the trick job of allowing large excursion capacity with a 2.5" voice coil on an eight inch subwoofer. The spider is a unique, progressive roll unit two layers thick. They also added a series of machined channels down the full height of the pole to increase air based cooling and also to reduce audible air velocity though the motor. This allowed Sundown to reduce the mounting depth a bit to expand installation options. It is built on Sundown's patented 8" subwoofer frame just like the SA-8 v.3 so it shares the same massive mechanical clearances (2.5” allowable).Įxtreme Cone Movement & Control ULTRA-HIGH EXCURSIONįor the X-8 v.2 Sundown removed the vented spacer ring as they did on the SA-8 v.3 and added the same high-velocity vent-holes around the frame base below the spider. The X-8 suspension design (spider & surround) was designed around creating larger peaks for SPL purposes. Contrary to the design of the other X subwoofers the X-8 is more of an SPL oriented subwoofer.
